Just how much money do you spend trying to get your name at the top of the search engine response? Apparently everyone is spending a lot of money on this considering a search in google for 'SEO' (Search Engine Optimization) retrieves 372 million responses. I'm bored with the research, but have encountered numerous accounts of different offers from $5/month to $5,000 a month promising to get a site to the top of the list. The reality, is that all the meta tags in the world won't increase your ranking without website visits. So how do you increase website visits?
This incorporate a reason for your past customers to log in to your website. Perhaps an incentivized referral program or maybe updated newsletters with discounts or coupons. However, the hits don't necessarily correlate to sales. You need to manage the dwell time of your visitors on the website. If your prospective customers aren't staying 15 seconds, their visit wasn't worth anyones programing time.
So my question is... What is more important, Social Media or real world marketing? In the age of social media, we can't ignore the numerous instances where social media attacked a company such as United Breaks Guitars. However, we need to make sure that we don't fail the real marketing possibilities that are often much cheaper, and much more efficient. Check out these five tips to help you out.

- Remove the chain from your pens - Almost every office I've had to sign in for an appointment at have chained down their pens. Let's be honest, I can by a pen for .25 cents a unit. If that's going to take my company negative, I've got bigger problems. Plus it just looks tacky. Instead make the thieves pay you back with advertising. Many companies offer customized office supplies for 25 cents to a dollar per unit. Save the good pens for the clients that sign and offer it to them as a signing pen. If it's a quality pen, they'll keep it and have a story to tell when someone borrows their pen.
- Business Cards are cheap don't be afraid to hand them out - While working as a recruiter it was difficult to get my name out. What I found was that most of my business cards could be found just outside my office in the trash can. I started making a joke out of it... I'd hand them two and make a point... "This is for the trash can and this is for a friend." If I had been allowed I would have turned the back of the cards into a referral form and offered a discount. Once I made a point to mention that they would throw away one, I started getting business card appointments in my office. Also, many times you can get your business card cost down to 5 cents per unit. Hand them out to everyone, and leave them everywhere.
- ASK FOR THE REFERRAL! - I don't know how many times I would supervise a sales call and find that professionally trained salesmen would fail to ask for the referral. It's simple, free, and often works! Turn one sale into two for free!
- Find your niche and live there - Unless you are a retailer, sitting in your office will not generate business. Find your niche and live in it. This requires strategic planning and deep searching within your company and the market you are trying to occupy. Find where your customers are, be there when they need you.
- Customer service is a sales tool - When is the last time you got a greeting card from someone that you purchased a service from? Customer service is why Phoenix Consulting desires to support the small business. Customer service can easily generate multiple sales if you make the customer feel like family and treat them right they will send their own friends and family to you. Word of mouth continues to be the best advertisement even in the Social Media Age. Send cards to customers during the holidays, if cards are too expensive, send e-mails. Make reminders in your calendar, and create databases to help you track this. Don't offer discounts, or special offers. Just give them the well wishes of the occasion. Remember, your goal is to make them family, not sell at this point.
